Give God Glory!

Psalm 29:2, "Give unto the LORD the glory due unto His Name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness".

Psalm 29:2 may well be considered the "Key Verse" for the entire Book of Psalms.

"Give unto the LORD the glory due unto His Name..." We are being reminded that we should live our lives so that it brings glory unto God! In fact, neglecting to give God the glory due unto His Name can be considered THE SOURCE of trouble in our world!

"Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, THEY GLORIFIED HIM NOT AS GOD (my emphasis), neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened." Romans 1:19-21

Are you glorifying God by the way you live and by what you say? Don't contribute to the source of trouble in this world, but contribute to the solution for this world - Give God glory! And that means simply...love God with all your heart, mind and strength; put God first in everything you think, say and do; and set out to honor Him in all your endeavors. When you pray, you give God glory. When you sing unto Him, you give God glory. When you obey Him, you give God glory. When you squelch the flesh, you give God glory. When you love out of a pure heart, you give God glory. "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31).

A Dry and Thirsty Land

Do you often feel the weight of discouragement fall upon you when you don't see fruit from your labor?

Months (or even years?) go by of witnessing for the Lord Jesus, and you've been preaching and proclaiming the Precious Gospel...yet not a soul saved, and it would seem saints of God around you are settled in their slumber.

Friend, be encouraged! We shouldn't let any situation quench our zeal. If souls are scarce, pray more, witness more, keep on submitting yourself unto God and don't give up - "They that sow in tears shall reap in joy."

Right now, think of the ones you know who love the Lord, who are serving Him and who desire to glorify their Sovereign...know that someone who didn't give up had to bring the Gospel to them.

God is the One who produces fruit; we merely plant the seed. Don't give up - be encouraged - keep on fighting the good fight - don't let the enemy quench your zeal - "Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us."

Too Young to Marry?

How young is too young to marry?

Today if we were to talk about teenagers getting married, most would agree (as I do) the majority of teens are just "too young" (and doesn't that really mean, "too immature"?) to marry. Basic responsibilities like sustaining an environment for individual spiritual growth, income provision and just a "personal upkeep" are good marks of maturity.

BTW: Parents - have we done our children a great disservice if our 18-19 year olds STILL cannot have a personal devotional time on their own; if they don't know the value of a dollar and have not had to work; if they don't know how to run a washing machine and dryer?

But I do wonder if God really intended for us to wait until we were "older" to get married...here's why I ponder this:

Prov 5:18, "...rejoice with the wife of thy youth".

1 Tim 5:14, "I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully."

Titus 2:3-5, "The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; (vs4) That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, (vs5) To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed."

Even though God doesn't say in these verses how young is "too young", the impression is given that people are at the "marrying age" when they're young. Before marriage - or any talk of marriage - parents and pastors should be consulted. Ultimately, God will lead if we will allow Him.

So then...is it "Biblically healthy" to wait and wait and wait to get married?

1 Tim 5:14, "I will therefore that the younger women marry..." vs15, "For some are already turned aside after Satan".

1 Cor 7:2, "Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband."

1 Cor 7:8-9, "I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I. (vs9) But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn."

People who are deeply in love (in their early twenties) just may be much better off marrying and then "sweating out" the situations of income and possessions instead of constantly putting it off to the point of falling into burning temptation.

Just preached this on the Lord's Day, 2-14-10...

"REQUIREMENTS FOR REVIVAL"

Nehemiah 9-10

Intro: Who believes we need a revival to sweep through our church?

-Who believes THEY need a personal revival to sweep through their own heart?

--How many have become cold & indifferent to the idea of God rekindling His fire in their heart?

I like to say that revival is a rekindling of God's fire in the heart...Revival from God has the heart burn with fervency, passion and an enthusiasm that produces action in a Christian.

WEBSTER defines revival = A return from a state of neglect or depression; a renewed & a more active attention to spiritual matters; an awakening.

*Knowing how revival is defined, I'm more and more convinced that revival is a lifestyle! It's a way of life for the believer!

DO YOU LONG FOR REVIVAL? DO YOU WANT TO LIVE IN REVIVAL?

If you need revival & if you long to live in revival, then revival will come with some requirements.

I. A RETURN TO BROKEN-HEARTEDNESS Neh 8:16-17; 9:1-2

Neh 8:16-17, "So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim. And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and sat under the booths: for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great gladness."

--The wall was built, the Feast of Tabernacles was observed for the first time since the days of Joshua, and there was a "very great gladness"...but then JUST ABOUT 3 WEEKS LATER,

Neh 9:1-2, "Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them. And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers."

FEASTING gave way to FASTING; REJOICING gave way to REPENTANCE; JOY gave way to HUMILITY.

--Do you know what that tells me? It all goes together in our walk with Christ! You can't have one without the other!

*If you try to avoid God humbling your heart, you will soon become hard-hearted...cold & indifferent to God & His things.

II. A REFLECTION UPON GOD'S GOODNESS

*Just listen to how Israel "counted their many blessings" as they reflected upon the Goodness of God - vs5-15 (as we read starting at vs6, count how many times the word "and" is used. I counted 31 times)

--That conjunction "and" shows us Israel "building up" in reflection a consistent repetition of God's faithfulness, goodness, grace and blessing.

Illus) "AIN'T GOD GOOD"! (Reflect on that...)

*We need to once again reflect on the Goodness of God until that smile comes back to our face & that joy of our salvation is restored!

III. A RECOGNITION OF OUR SINFULNESS

And what I mean by that is an honest self-examination regarding our sin.

9:16-26 - These verses give us a stark contrast between the heart of man and the heart of God.

--Oh, can't we recognize our sinful ways anymore?

--Has sin just become THAT acceptable?

--Does the heart even break over sin anymore?

*WHAT DOES YOUR HEART BREAK OVER TODAY?

*WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOUR HEART BROKE OVER SIN?

Illus) Here are some good searching (probing) questions...

-Am I a hypocrite?

-Am I honest in my words & acts?

-How do I use my tongue?

-Do I exaggerate?

-Am I reliable...can I be trusted?

-Am I a grumbler, complainer, murmurer?

-Am I jealous, impure, irritable, touchy, proud?

-Does the Bible speak to me?

-Am I enjoying a healthy & fervent prayer life?

-Am I just wasting away my spare time?

*I pray that these are heart-searching questions -- WE ALL MUST GET TO THIS: 9:33

IV. A RENEWAL OF OUR OBEDIENCE

*Revival is NOT simply an emotional upheaval -- revival produces ACTION! 10:29-30;39

Vs 29-30: Revival affected their HOMES

Vs39: Revival affected their WORSHIP

*A renewal of our obedience = our faith in action!

Concl: Who believes we need a revival to sweep through our church?

-Who believes THEY need a personal revival to sweep through their own heart?

--How many have become cold & indifferent to the idea of God rekindling His fire in their heart?

G'day to you!

Well...I'm blogging again. It's been a very long while. I had another blog - The Pastor's Pen - that, to make a long story short, consumed me.

This new blog is intentionally a "scaled-down" web-log with the intention of recording the times and events of the Lighthouse Baptist Church of Loomis, NE - a group of wonderful people who are trying to love and follow our Lord.

I pray you are blessed (and even challenged) as I record what the Lord is doing here in our "neck of the woods".
